Rabbits are used for toxicology tests, for damage to skin, eyes and for effects on reproduction. A number of routes for dosing, including gavage (inserting a tube down the throat to pump products directly into the stomach), injections and rectal dosing. They also describe rabbits as “particularly useful” for skin and eye tests. Across the world, rabbits are still used in the 70-year old Draize Eye Irritancy test, due to their large eyes, low cost and availability. Despite that the Draize test has been shown to be unreliable and advanced scientific replacements tests are available, it remains listed as a model for eye irritation.
